I've been training jiu-jitsu for over 14 years. What kept me in it was the strategy — it's a problem-solving sport. Every roll is different, every person presents a different puzzle, and technique beats size when you know what you're doing. That's what got me hooked and it's what still keeps me on the mats every day.
I earned my black belt in 2021 under Osvaldo "Queixinho" Moizinho, co-founder of Ares BJJ. I've competed at a high level — American Nationals, the Phoenix Open, Fight to Win, Pans, Worlds, and more — but competing was never the reason I opened a gym.
I started Dark Matter because coaching is my favorite part of jiu-jitsu. I like taking someone who's never trained before, who's nervous and doesn't know what to expect, and helping them get to a place where they feel at home on the mats. Watching that happen never gets old.
KIDS WHO WANT TO COME BACK
I've been coaching for over 10 years and the thing I hear most from students and parents is that I'm detailed and very technical in the way I understand and teach jiu-jitsu. I don't just show a technique and tell you to figure it out. I break things into small steps, explain why each piece matters, and I'll stay with you until it makes sense.
With kids, I keep it fun — they have to want to come back — but I run class like a martial arts class, not recess. There's structure, there are expectations, and kids actually respond well to that.
Most kids spend their free time on a screen. Getting them on the mats instead, teaching them to focus, work hard, and respect the people around them — that's something I take seriously. Helping shape these kids into good people through jiu-jitsu is the part of this job that gets me up in the morning.
BUILT FOR BEGINNERS
Our team has brought home 11 trophies from tournaments like the Jiu-Jitsu World League and Arizona Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu League. I'm proud of that, but honestly most of the people who train here don't compete, and that's completely fine.
