Mesa adults are making the short drive to Dark Matter for jiu-jitsu that actually challenges them. Led by an Ares BJJ Black Belt, our adult program builds real skills in a gym where everyone started as a beginner. First class is free.

Jiu-jitsu changes more than your body. Here's what Mesa residents tell us after their first few months on the mats.
Every roll engages your entire body — grip, core, hips, legs, cardio. It is the most complete workout you will ever do, and Mesa members consistently tell us it replaced their gym membership within weeks.
Jiu-jitsu puts you in uncomfortable positions and teaches you to stay calm, assess options, and execute. This ability to think clearly under pressure transfers directly to work, relationships, and every high-stakes situation in life.
You will learn how most real confrontations actually unfold — and how to control them. Within months, you will know how to handle someone larger than you using leverage and positioning, not strength.
After college, making close friends gets hard. Jiu-jitsu solves that. You will bond with training partners through shared effort and mutual challenge — the kind of friendship that does not form in a coffee shop.
Every class builds on the last. The belt system provides clear milestones, but the daily sense of improvement — landing a technique for the first time, escaping a position you could not last month — is what keeps Mesa members coming back.
Members consistently report higher energy levels, better sleep, and improved mood. A morning class sets the tone for the entire day. An evening class erases the stress of the workday. Either way, you leave feeling better than when you walked in.
Mesa has a handful of martial arts gyms, but most focus on kids, kickboxing, or MMA. If you are an adult looking specifically for jiu-jitsu — real technique-based training with live sparring — your options narrow quickly. Dark Matter exists for adults who want serious instruction in a welcoming environment.
What sets us apart is consistency. Coach Korey teaches every class — you are never learning from a rotating cast of assistants with different teaching styles. That consistency means faster progress because the curriculum builds logically from session to session.
We are at 1525 E Apache Blvd in Tempe — typically a 7-12 minute drive from most of Mesa. Take the 101 or the 202 to Rural Road and you are on Apache in minutes. Families from East Mesa near Power Road add about 5 minutes via the 202.
We run adult classes six days a week with multiple time slots — mornings at 9:00 AM, afternoons at 5:00 PM, evenings at 6:00 PM, and Saturday at 11:00 AM. Mesa commuters heading home can stop at Dark Matter before crossing back into Mesa.
Morning classes on Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 AM for shift workers, remote employees, or anyone who prefers to train early. Evening classes every weekday at 5:00 or 6:00 PM for the after-work crowd. Saturdays at 11:00 AM for weekend warriors. No matter what your Mesa work schedule looks like, there's a class that fits.
