It's not just a workout. It's not just self-defense. ASU students and staff tell us jiu-jitsu changed how they move through every part of their life. Here's what to expect.
We are on Apache Blvd โ the same street that runs through ASU. No car needed, no parking hassle. Walk, bike, or take the light rail.
The ASU fitness center has equipment. We have expertise. The difference between working out alone and training under a Black Belt with a dedicated team is the difference between going through the motions and actually transforming.
Finals, group projects, job applications โ college stress is real. Jiu-jitsu gives you 60 minutes where none of that exists. ASU students call it their best coping mechanism.
Your training partners include students, professionals, parents, and retirees. It is a social circle that extends beyond the ASU bubble โ real relationships built on shared effort.
Walking home from Mill Ave at night hits different when you know how to handle yourself. BJJ gives you practical skills for real situations โ not theoretical techniques from a workshop.
Club dues, tournament fees, equipment costs add up. BJJ gives you a complete physical activity with coaching, community, and competition opportunities all under one membership.
ASU has intramural sports, rec center classes, and dozens of fitness options. But none teach you a martial art from a Black Belt instructor with a dedicated team. Dark Matter fills a gap the university cannot โ serious skill development in a discipline you will carry for life.
Our gym draws students from every ASU college plus faculty, staff, and Tempe community members. The diversity of training partners means you constantly adapt to different body types and styles, accelerating your learning.
We are at 1525 E Apache Blvd โ walking distance from most campus housing, a quick bike ride from dorms, and directly on the light rail route. No car needed, no parking fees.
Morning at 9:00 AM works between classes. The 5:00 and 6:00 PM sessions fit after a day of classes or work. Saturday at 11:00 AM is perfect for weekend training without cutting into Friday night.
Being on Apache Blvd means we're part of the ASU community. Current students, grad students, faculty, and staff are all welcome. If you've been wanting to try a martial art but didn't know where to start, we're literally in your neighborhood. Several of our members walked in as ASU students with zero experience and are now some of our most dedicated practitioners.
We run both Gi (traditional uniform) and No-Gi classes. Gi training develops precise grips, patience, and technical detail. No-Gi is faster, more athletic, and translates directly to real-world self-defense scenarios. Most Tempe members end up training both and finding value in the contrast. You'll figure out what you prefer โ or realize you love both.
Our curriculum is structured for progression. Beginners learn fundamentals โ survival, escapes, basic submissions โ without getting thrown into the deep end. Experienced practitioners get quality training partners and coaching that continues to sharpen their game. Everyone trains together with respect, and the culture ensures new members are welcomed and supported from day one.
Morning, evening, and weekend training โ six days a week.
No contracts. No pressure. Walk in, train, and see if the mats are where you belong.
