WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR FIRST BJJ CLASS

Dark Matter Jiu-Jitsu · Tempe, AZ · March 2026

You signed up for your first jiu-jitsu class. Now you're staring at your closet wondering what to wear. Don't overthink it — here's exactly what you need (and what to leave at home).

Do I need a gi for my first class?

Not for your first class. Most gyms — including Dark Matter Jiu-Jitsu in Tempe — will let you try your first class in regular athletic clothing. If you decide to continue training, you'll eventually want to invest in a gi (the traditional uniform — the standard training attire recognized by organizations like the IBJJF), but there's no rush.

We offer both Gi and No-Gi classes, so even after you become a member, you'll have options depending on your preference.

What should I wear if I don't have a gi?

For your first class, wear a fitted t-shirt or rash guard (avoid loose shirts that can get caught), athletic shorts or joggers with no zippers or pockets with metal, and compression shorts or leggings underneath for comfort. Avoid anything with metal — belt buckles, zippers, buttons, or jewelry. These can scratch your training partners or damage the mats.

What should I bring to my first class?

Bring a water bottle (you'll need it), a towel, flip-flops or sandals for walking off the mats (never walk barefoot in the bathroom and then back on the mats), and a positive attitude. That's genuinely all you need.

You don't need to bring any special equipment, protective gear, or paperwork. At Dark Matter, we handle everything when you arrive — just show up 10-15 minutes early so we can get you set up.

What about hygiene and grooming?

This is actually important and most beginner guides skip it. Trim your fingernails and toenails before class — long nails can scratch your training partners. Shower before class if possible. Remove all jewelry including rings, watches, earrings, and necklaces. Tie long hair back securely. And if you're feeling sick, stay home — the close contact in jiu-jitsu means illness spreads quickly.

Good hygiene is a sign of respect for your training partners and your gym. The CDC recommends showering after close-contact sports to prevent skin infections — this applies to all grappling arts. At Dark Matter, we maintain strict mat cleaning protocols and expect the same respect from our members.

What happens when I actually walk through the door?

This is the part most people are nervous about. Here's exactly what happens at Dark Matter: You walk in, introduce yourself at the front desk. Coach Korey or one of our instructors will greet you, show you where to put your shoes and bag, and introduce you to a few training partners. You'll warm up with the class, then the instructor will teach a technique. You'll drill it with a partner who will help you through it. Depending on the class, there may be some light sparring at the end — but as a first-timer, there's zero pressure to participate.

Every single person on that mat started exactly where you are right now. Nobody is judging you. Everyone remembers their first day.
